What is Fire Glass Really All About

Fire glass…

Interesting.

What do you think when you think or have heard of fire glass? Glass on fire, cocktail glass with a fire coming from it.

Yes…

I have thought of these things too.

But there is another amazing way to use glass.

Now you know that glass cannot burn, it can melt, but it can not burn.

Soo…

Yes, it is see-through, sparkly in the light and!

Cannot burn, but can melt in very high temperatures like a furnace of course, but we’re off the track here…

Yes!

It’s the fireplace or fire pit

Glad we got that sorted out!

Now…

What is Fire Glass and How Does it Work?

Fireplace glass or also known as fire crystals is made of tempered glass that has been tumbled and polished to create these little pebbles that are resistant to high heat.

This glass will not melt, burn, or explode like regular glass, smoke, or soot no matter how long you actually use it.

It is also resistant to discolouration when used with a natural gas which is also good to hear…

How Does it Work?

This special glass is tempered glass, meaning that it is a type of safety glass that is manufactured with the aid of heat or chemicals used to strengthen the glass.

You might have also heard of this process is sometimes referred to as “tempering.”

And did you know that tempered glass can be up to four times stronger than typical annealed glass of the same size and thickness?

The safe-tempered glass is pressure or chemically treated to make it resistant to high heat so that it can sit safely in flames without melting or producing any of those toxic fumes.

These pebbles are placed directly over the burners, and the flames find their way through the gas in the stones or go around and coalesce at the centre, so it looks like the flames are dancing on top.

Because these pebbles retain a lot of the heat from the flame itself and radiate it outwards, you get that increase in heat output you could say by about four times than the average gas fireplace.

Types

You might be surprised to know that there are different types of fire glass on the market.

There are:-

  • lava glass
  • fire beads
  • fire pit glass
  • fire beads

What is The Best Color Fire Glass?

All people have different favoured colours, yet there is a fire glass colour that you could say does stand out from the rest.

This is the Sky blue Reflective Fire Glass colour which is ideal for all natural gas fire or propane applications.

This blue fire glass pebble is quite richly coloured that is appealing in outdoor and indoor fireplaces and is tempered to withstand the most extreme temperatures of fire pits and fireplaces.

Of course, this will entirely depend on your own taste as well as on the colour scheme options you have in your dwelling that will give different vibes to your space.

Here are some colour options:

  • Emerald
  • Ruby red
  • Koi
  • Caribbean blue
  • Black pearl
  • Sapphire

How Much Do I Need?

Yes…

I thought this question might come up…

You don’t want to be buying too much fire glass as it can get quite costly, so reaching into your pockets too deeply might hurt your wallet or purse if you want it now but the finances are a bit thin on the ground at the time.

So, it’s a good idea to get an estimate of how much you need before you buy some.

The quantity you need depends on how much depth you want, and the coverage you might need in your fire pit or fireplace.

It has been quite popular with some people to use the clear arctic colour as the base and then finish off with the smoke colour on top.

Or you might even combine both of the colours, so you get a consistent blend throughout.

And when it comes to the level, it is quite common for there to be a larger amount of this glass applied to the base of the fire.

This actually creates a mounded look to support the flames.

If your fireplace area is quite a long one, then having the glass at a flat level on the surface might be your preference.

The average size grading is roughly about: 5-30 mm.

This can also be available in 2.5kg and 10kg bags as well.

The Fire Glass Fireplace and Its Benefits

Well…

I would probably say that the most compelling advantages of using glass instead of firewood for instance are the lower amount of maintenance you will need to do.

If you are the sort who likes things low maintenance, (not saying that you are lazy of course), glass is not really going to need to be brushed up and thrown outside like the wood embers from a wood log fireplace.

So, we are looking at:-

  • efficient temperature radiation
  • durability
  • safety qualities
  • low maintenance

As you can see, now that we have covered a few things about fire glass, its qualities. Reflective fire glass can even be used in a fire glass pit.

That it’s not only functional…

But what I really like is that even when the fire is not going, the spectacle of the reflection and colours of this fire glass on its own is going to be a space of beauty.
